Job Title: Development Director

The Development Director is responsible for creating a culture of philanthropy to ensure sustained funding for mission related programs; creating lasting relationships with donors and volunteers; leading/collaborating on three public events annually and raising the profile of YWCA Madison in the community. The Development Director manages the YWCA Madison fund development, marketing, volunteer and large-scale fundraising events.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Operations Management
Serves as a member of the YWCA Madison executive team, partners with the CEO on operational and strategic issues as they arise, and participates in the ongoing strategic planning process.
Attends monthly board meetings and serves as a staff liaison on the Board Governance Committee, Development Committee, and others as assigned.
Creates monthly development reports for the Board of Directors, as well as assembles monthly board packets.
Ensures best practices and strategies for volunteer programs, volunteer recruitment, and relationship building.
Works as a team member with other YWCA Madison departments to develop integrated programming and procedures.
Assists in the development and management of program budgets. Approves department expenditures
Fund Development
Develops and implements fund development plan forYWCA Madison. Prepares short- and long-range goals to meet YWCA funding objectives, and enlists support from staff, the YWCA Madison Board of Directors, community members and volunteers.
Raises funds through the following strategies:
Major gifts: Identifies potential contributors through examination of past records, individual and corporate contracts, knowledge of community and collaboration with board of directors and fund development committees. Ensures excellent stewardship of donors through one on one meetings, personal contact, written correspondence, recognition and support in collaboration with the CEO and the Board of Directors.
Empowerment Society: Engages members of the Empowerment Society (a five year pledge giving group) through meetings, timely updates, and accurate record keeping.
Grants: With the assistance of a fulltime Grants and Advocacy Coordinator, researches private grant agencies, corporations, and foundations to identify potential sources of funding for program support, community service, or other projects. In some cases, develops appropriate grant requests for private funders in collaboration with the Grants and Advocacy Coordinator, Grants Management & Strategic Initiatives Director and CEO. Strategizes around public grants in collaboration with the Grants Management & Strategic Initiatives Director and CEO.
Events: Responsible for overall development of all fundraising events. Main point of contact for Circle and Women of Distinction. Leads the Circle Committee.
In-Kind Support: Solicits donations of goods to support programming needs in collaboration with the Development and Volunteer Coordinator.
Drives: Plans and coordinates fund drives for special projects and ongoing operations in collaboration with the Development and Volunteer Coordinator.
Planned Giving: Establishes and grows planned giving for YWCA Madison.
Establishes development, marketing and volunteer policies, systems, and procedures.
Develops donor recognition activities.
Informs potential contributors of special needs of YWCA Madison, and encourages individuals, corporations, and foundations to establish or contribute to special funds through endowments, trusts, donations of gifts-in-kind, or bequests, conferring with attorneys to establish methods of transferring funds to benefit both donors and institution.
Oversees and monitors progress against goals.
Marketing & Communications
Prepares and monitors annual Communication Plan to maximize the brand, reputation, and communication efforts of the YWCA Madison in collaboration with the Marketing & Development Manager.
Communicates the YWCA Madison’s vision, mission, and values to the public.
Develops public relations materials and maintains good media relationships to enhance the YWCA Madison image in conjunction with CEO and Marketing & Development Manager
Information Systems Management
Establishes policies and maintains records of contributors, foundational grants and volunteers within the Bloomerang database.
Oversees donor acknowledgment processes to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
Enters major gift information accurately and in a timely manner.
Completes reports and paperwork as needed.
Sends out and tracks pledge reminders for major gifts and sponsorships in collaboration with the Development and Volunteer Coordinator
Supervisory Responsibilities
Hires, trains, develops, and directs department staff.
Provides a portion of staff orientation to all new department employees and ensures completion of all orientation and training requirements.
Motivates staff to achieve goals through individual and group supervision, coaching, goal setting, training and staff development, among other strategies.
Reviews and evaluates staff performance.
Remains accountable for positive client service and accurate record keeping.
Directly supervises the Development and Marketing Manager, Grants and Advocacy Coordinator, and Development and Volunteer Coordinator.
Program Development & Management
Is aware of changing needs of populations served and opportunities for appropriate staff training and inter-agency cooperation.
Ensures effective program operations, goals, and expectations.

Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree from a college or university or three years related Development experience in addition to requirements below.
3 years related experience including 2 years supervisory/management experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Highly organized and able to direct the many aspects of the YWCA Madison’s development work.
Must support the YWCA mission: YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.
Donor Management Software experience preferred.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Possess computer skills in Word, Excel, and G-Suite.
